Interoceptor I (in use)
Interoceptors I-III are large pots completely enclosed except for an oval opening into which the participant can position their face. Small perforations surrounding this opening cast light patterns, and when the user gazes inside, they are plunged into almost complete darkness aside from these small lights.
The goal of this exercise is to introduce individuals to the concept of interoception–the body’s ability to perceive internal sensations. This internal sense is intrinsically linked to our emotional and mental state, and is an important aspect of the mind-body connection that often goes unnoticed. By externalizing this process–the internal gaze–and using the vessel as a metaphor for one’s own body, it allows users to, through a simple action, practice interoception.
